As Medical Director of the EJGH Emergency Department for almost 20 years, Dr. John Wales takes to heart the mission of East Jefferson General Hospital – to deliver the highest quality, compassionate care to the patients and community we serve. As a former Chair of The Foundation Board of Trustees, he embodies the philanthropic spirit by leading through example.

Dr. Wales had heard about new technologies that made it easier and faster to intubate patients. So through a donor directed gift to The Foundation, he took it upon himself to make sure his Emergency Physicians were getting the best equipment to provide their patients with the best care possible.

Through a generous charitable contribution by the EJGH Emergency Physicians to The Foundation, the Emergency Department purchased a state-of the art video laryngoscope. The video laryngoscope is designed for indirect laryngoscopy, difficult endotracheal intubations as well as routine intubations to provided clinicians a consistently clear, real-time view of the airway and tube placement on a video screen. This results in a more accurate intubation and a higher percentage of first-attempt successes in intubating a patient while minimizing trauma to the patient.

The new equipment is used an average of 20 times a month and has made a tremendous impact on the staff and patients. "It allows for better team work – everyone can work together on the intubation because we can all see what's happening. I'm convinced that this new technology is saving lives," says Wales.

Dr. Wales hopes that this donation will help serve as an example of the impact that such a directed donation can have on patient care and hopes it will inspire others to do something similar. "I knew we could help directly people and save lives with this donation." he says.
